Anyone wanting to publish a book often only realises at the very end how many mistakes aren't in the text itself but in the file. That's precisely why it's worth preparing the book file to be print-ready before it goes to the printer or publishing platform. A good novel doesn't become better just because it was exported as a PDF. However, it can quickly look unprofessional due to incorrect margins, missing fonts, or messy page breaks.
Why the print-ready book file is more than an export
Many manuscripts are ready to be written, but far from ready to be printed. That's an important distinction. In the word document, paragraphs can be out of place, images can be provisional, or page numbers can still be missing. This can no longer happen in the print file.
Once a book is printed, every technical decision counts. Paper size, trim, layout, margins, embedded fonts, and graphic resolution all work together. A common mistake is to write in a standard DIN A4 document first and then somehow reduce the layout later. This works for test prints, but rarely for a professional book. The type area must fit the final print size from the beginning.

Book typography can be subtle. Readers often don't consciously notice good typography, but they quickly notice when it's missing.
Setting up images, graphics and solid colours correctly
Once your book contains illustrations, the requirements increase significantly. A graphic that looks decent on screen is not automatically usable for print. Resolution, colour mode, and placement are crucial.
For printing, images should have a sufficiently high resolution. Blurry or internet-copied graphics will immediately stand out negatively in the book. Black areas also deserve attention. Pure screen black can appear flat in print, while incorrectly set composite blacks can be problematic for small fonts.
If your project contains many images, such as a non-fiction book, workbook, or photo book, a final proofread is not enough. Then each illustration should be checked individually – technically and from a design perspective.

Ensure that chapters start as consistently as possible. For many book projects, new main chapters start on the right-hand side of an odd-numbered page. This is not always mandatory, but often makes sense. If this results in blank pages, they must be deliberately planned in.
Equally important are widows and orphans, i.e. single lines standing awkwardly at the top or bottom of a page. A single such line break doesn't ruin a book. However, many of them can make a file look unfinished. This calls for fine-tuning, not blind automation.

Most problems aren't catastrophes, but small technical oversights with significant consequences. These include inconsistent indents, incorrectly placed page numbers, margins that are too small, pixelated images, missing bleed, double spaces, misaligned footnotes, or an export with unsuitable PDF settings.
